Recently, I had a conversation with someone who was struggling with a question many of us face: How do you decide when something is worth speaking up about?

Whether it’s at work, with a partner, a family member, or a friend, it can sometimes be difficult to know when to put your foot down and when to let something go.

Maybe you’re uncomfortable with confrontation. Maybe you’re afraid of hurting someone’s feelings, stepping on toes, or creating unnecessary tension. Or perhaps you’ve spoken up in the past and it didn’t go well, so now you hesitate.

But what happens when you don’t speak up?

Sometimes we convince ourselves that something isn’t worth the trouble. We tell ourselves it’s easier to let it go. And sometimes it is! Not every disagreement needs to become a conversation, and not every frustration requires action.

But other times, those little things start to add up. We become resentful, frustrated, or feel as though our needs and opinions don’t matter. We may even find ourselves getting angry with someone who has no idea we’re upset.

So how do you decide when to speak up?

I think it starts with understanding what’s really bothering you and why.

Is this something that goes against your values? Is it a boundary that keeps getting crossed? Are you feeling unheard or unappreciated? Or is it simply something that frustrated you in the moment but won’t matter tomorrow?

And perhaps just as importantly, what are you hoping to accomplish by speaking up?

Are you looking for someone to change their behavior? Do you want them to understand your perspective? Are you trying to protect a relationship, establish a boundary, or simply feel heard?

These aren’t always easy questions to answer, especially when emotions are involved.

That’s where coaching can help.

Coaching isn’t about someone telling you whether you should speak up or stay quiet. It’s about creating the space to explore what’s happening, understand your reactions, and consider your options.

Sometimes you’ll discover that something you thought was a big deal really isn’t. Other times, you’ll recognize that something you’ve been brushing aside is actually very important to you.

And sometimes, the biggest realization is that speaking up doesn’t have to mean confrontation. It can simply mean having an honest conversation, asking a question, or sharing how something made you feel.

You don’t have to choose between keeping the peace and honoring your own needs. There may be a way to do both.

The next time you find yourself wondering whether something is worth speaking up about, give yourself a little space to reflect.

What matters most to you in this situation? What might happen if you say something? What might happen if you don’t?

You may find that the answer becomes clearer when you give yourself permission to explore the question.
