For years, I thought my problem was discipline.
I could find the perfect gym.
The perfect yoga studio.
The perfect trainer.
The perfect 5:30am class.
And yet… when the alarm went off, I hit snooze.
After a long day of work, I would tell myself I was going to the gym — and then find myself on the couch instead.
It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be healthy.
It wasn’t that I didn’t understand the benefits.
It wasn’t even that I didn’t have access to great options.
So what was it?
The Real Block Wasn’t Laziness — It Was Shame
Every time I said, “I’ll go tomorrow,” and then didn’t go, I felt bad about myself.
And that feeling started to build.
Eventually, I wasn’t just avoiding the workout — I was avoiding the planning of the workout. Because planning meant risking failure. And failure meant shame.
That’s exhausting energy to carry.
When I began working with my own coach, she asked a simple but powerful question:
What’s really holding you back?
Not the surface answer. Not the “I’m tired.” Not the “I don’t feel like it.”
But what was underneath?
I realized I was approaching exercise as an obligation. A measure of worth. A box I had to check to prove I was “doing well.”
No wonder I didn’t want to go.
The Shift: From Obligation to Self-Care
Coaching helped me see something freeing:
It’s okay to not go.
That sentence alone changed my energy.
Instead of “I failed again,” it became:
“I didn’t go today. I can choose again tomorrow.”
Instead of dread, I felt space.
Instead of shame, I felt permission.
And from that place, something surprising happened — I actually wanted to go more often.
When exercise became something I got to do for myself, rather than something I had to do to fix myself, my relationship with movement changed.
It became self-care.
It became energy-building.
It became an opportunity — not a test.
Motivation Follows Energy
We often think we need motivation first.
But in my experience — both personally and in coaching — motivation follows energy.
If you’re approaching health from guilt, self-criticism, or pressure, your energy is heavy. And heavy energy doesn’t want to move.
When you approach it from compassion, choice, and self-respect, your energy lightens. And lighter energy moves more naturally.
If you’ve been struggling to stay consistent with exercise, I invite you to ask:
-
What story am I telling myself about this?
-
What am I making it mean if I don’t go?
-
Am I trying to improve myself… or punish myself?
There is a different way.
One rooted in awareness.
One rooted in choice.
One rooted in compassion.
And from there, sustainable health becomes much more possible.
