All of my posts are based on my own experiences, but this post is particularly personal.
Earlier this week, a close family member was admitted to the hospital. I thought the hospital would quickly figure out the root cause of the symptoms with tests and procedures, but days later there has only been, “Well, this is likely,” or “It’s most likely this,” or “We need to do another test to find out more.”
I have leaned on my training in mindfulness and being present to stop my mind from going to the worst-case scenario — telling myself that going there won’t help matters. This may sound cold, but it allows me to stay grounded and maintain my ability to provide support and help where needed.
I can focus on the time we still have together instead of grieving the time we may lose.
I am grateful for this sense of presence. It’s not hoping for the best or preparing for the worst. It’s being present and embracing all the love and joy of today.
I am thankful for today.
