Life has a way of taking over sometimes.
Maybe work has been especially demanding. Maybe someone you love needs your attention and support. Maybe you’ve been dealing with something emotionally exhausting, and just getting through the day takes all the energy you have.
Whatever the reason, the things you normally do to take care of yourself slowly start to fall away.
You miss a doctor’s appointment and never get around to rescheduling it. You stop going to that yoga class you enjoyed. Grocery shopping falls off the list, so you find yourself ordering takeout more often. It’s convenient, but it’s expensive, and you’re not necessarily eating the way you’d like to.
None of these things seems like a big deal on its own. But they start to add up.
And then one day, you look around and realize how many things you’ve let slide.
Suddenly, it feels like everything is spiraling. You’re behind on appointments, your routines are gone, you’re spending more money than you intended, and you can’t quite remember the last time you did something just for yourself.
You feel like you’re losing control.
But here’s something worth remembering: You can hit reset.
You Don’t Have to Fix Everything Today
When we recognize how much we’ve put aside, our first instinct might be to try to catch up on everything at once.
We make ambitious lists. We tell ourselves that starting Monday, we’re going to eat better, exercise regularly, get organized, make those appointments, and finally tackle everything we’ve been avoiding.
But that can become just another source of pressure.
What if, instead, you gave yourself permission to start small?
Set aside one hour. Not to do everything you’ve been putting off, but simply to figure out what those things are.
Grab a notebook, open a document, or use whatever works for you. Make a list of everything that’s been sitting in the back of your mind.
The appointment you need to reschedule. The friend you’ve been meaning to call. The exercise routine you want to return to. The bills you need to review. The groceries you need to buy. The things you’ve been wanting to do for yourself but haven’t had the energy to think about.
Get it all out of your head and onto paper.
You don’t have to do everything on the list. You don’t even have to do anything on the list that day.
Sometimes, simply acknowledging what’s there is enough to quiet some of the noise in your mind.
Instead of carrying around that vague feeling that you’re forgetting something or falling behind, you can actually see what needs your attention.
And once you can see it, you can begin to make choices.
Small Steps Create Space
Maybe the first thing you do is reschedule that doctor’s appointment.
Maybe you look up the yoga class schedule, even if you’re not ready to attend this week.
Maybe you plan just two dinners instead of trying to overhaul your entire eating routine.
These might seem like insignificant steps, but they’re not.
Every small action is a reminder that you have some control over how you move forward.
And those small actions begin to create space.
Space to think. Space to breathe. Space to make decisions about what matters to you, rather than constantly reacting to whatever is demanding your attention.
Eventually, those little steps make the bigger ones feel possible.
A Different Way to Think About Getting Back on Track
One of the things we explore in Core Energy Coaching is how our perspectives influence the way we experience situations.
When we’re overwhelmed, it’s easy to focus on everything we’re not doing. We see the unfinished tasks, the missed opportunities, and the routines we’ve abandoned.
And we tell ourselves we should be doing better.
But what happens when we shift that perspective?
Instead of asking, “How did I let everything get so out of control?” what if we asked, “What’s one thing I can do today to feel a little more in control?”
Instead of focusing on how far we’ve fallen behind, what if we recognized that our energy was needed somewhere else for a while?
Sometimes, putting things aside is exactly what we need to do. Supporting someone we love, navigating a difficult time, or simply allowing ourselves to rest may be more important than maintaining our usual routines.
That doesn’t mean we’ve failed.
It means our priorities shifted.
And when we’re ready, we can shift them again.
Give Yourself Permission to Begin Again
There isn’t a deadline for getting back to yourself.
You don’t have to make up for lost time. You don’t have to return to every routine you had before. In fact, you may discover that some of those things aren’t even important to you anymore.
That’s okay, too.
The goal isn’t to recreate the life you had before things got complicated.
It’s to intentionally create space for the life you want now.
So if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by all the things you’ve put aside, consider giving yourself an hour to hit reset.
Make the list. Look at what’s there. Decide what matters.
Then choose one small step.
Because sometimes, taking back control doesn’t begin with a big change.
It begins with the simple realization that you can choose where to put your energy next.
At Sunshine Core Energy Coaching, I help people explore how their perspectives and energy influence the choices they make. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling to find your way back to the things that matter to you, I’d love to explore how coaching can help.
