Lately, I’ve noticed a common theme in conversations with friends, colleagues, and clients: the feeling of standing at a crossroads.
Many of us spend years building careers in what people often call “corporate.” We become experts in our field. We understand the rules, the language, the expectations, and the path ahead. There is comfort in that familiarity, even when the work no longer energizes us.
Over the past few months, I’ve met several people who chose a different path.
One opened a coffee shop. His passion wasn’t just serving coffee—it was sourcing unique beans, experimenting with flavors, and creating an experience for his customers. You could see the excitement in his eyes as he talked about his craft. This wasn’t simply a business venture. It was an opportunity to build something that reflected who he is.
Another person opened a local honey store. The store itself was charming, but what stood out to me was the purpose behind it. Customers could sample different varieties of honey while learning about the important role bees play in our ecosystem. Alongside the honey were packets of wildflower seeds designed to support local pollinators. It wasn’t just a store; it was education, advocacy, and passion wrapped into one.
What struck me most was that the honey store owner didn’t originally plan this path. He had been laid off from his corporate job. What initially felt like a setback became an opportunity. He told me he feels lighter now. Happier. More aligned with the life he wants to live.
His story made me wonder how many of us are standing at our own crossroads.
We often stay in the same job, industry, or routine because it’s comfortable. It’s what we know. Even when we dream about something different, there are countless reasons to stay put. We worry about financial security. We question whether we’re qualified. We wonder what others will think. We convince ourselves that someday will be the right time.
Sometimes life nudges us toward change. Sometimes it gives us a stronger push. A layoff. A health scare. A family situation. An unexpected opportunity. Something happens that forces us to reconsider the path we’re on.
But what if we didn’t have to wait?
What if we explored our interests before we were pushed out of the nest? What if we gave ourselves permission to be curious? To experiment? To take one small step toward something that excites us?
I’m not suggesting everyone quit their job tomorrow and open a coffee shop or honey store. Most transitions happen gradually. They begin with a conversation, a class, a volunteer opportunity, a side project, or a simple question:
“What if?”
As a coach, I’ve learned that crossroads are rarely about choosing between a right path and a wrong path. More often, they’re about choosing between the familiar and the possible.
The familiar feels safe because we know it. The possible feels uncertain because we haven’t experienced it yet.
Yet some of the most meaningful growth happens when we allow ourselves to explore what might be waiting beyond what we already know.
So today, I leave you with a question:
If fear, expectations, and practical concerns were temporarily set aside, what path would you be curious enough to explore?
You don’t have to take the leap today.
But perhaps it’s worth taking a look down the road.
