I recently read an article about burnout, emotional intelligence, and toxic work environments. It stopped me in my tracks because it put words to something I’ve experienced throughout my career.

I’ve always believed that one of my strengths is emotional intelligence. It allows me to read a room, sense when someone is struggling, understand how decisions affect others, and anticipate the ripple effects that aren’t always obvious.

As a leader, that’s a gift.

But in a toxic work environment, it can also become incredibly heavy.

When you deeply understand the impact of dysfunction on your team, you naturally want to protect them. Great leaders don’t just focus on productivity—they create psychological safety, build trust, and try to prevent toxic cultures from taking root.

But what happens when you don’t have the authority to change the environment?

What happens when you speak up, offer solutions, and your concerns aren’t heard?

That’s where burnout quietly begins.

You carry not only your own stress but also the weight of watching talented, dedicated people struggle. You feel responsible, even when the situation is outside your control.

I’ve been there.

What changed for me wasn’t the workplace.

It was me.

Through Core Energy Coaching, I learned that while I couldn’t control the environment around me, I could control where I invested my energy. I stopped placing all of my fulfillment into one part of my life. I rediscovered hobbies, relationships, personal growth, and a sense of purpose that existed beyond my job title.

The situation didn’t magically improve.

But I did.

Instead of feeling depleted every day, I began to feel energized again. I had the resilience to navigate difficult situations without allowing them to define me.

If you’re leading through a challenging environment, know this: you don’t have to carry the weight alone. Sometimes the greatest act of leadership is learning how to protect your own energy so you can continue showing up for the people who need you most.

If this resonates with you, I’d love to help.
